The mission of St. Louis Hillel at Washington University is to enrich the lives of Jewish undergraduate and graduate students in St. Louis so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world.

Leadership Opportunities

 First Year Students of Hillel
Be a part of this exciting new initiative offered by St. Louis Hillel. Previously known as the Community Development Fellowship (CDF), the First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH) initiative is a new and improved way to engage Jewish freshmen at Wash U! If you attended the Into the Wild retreat as a freshmen and want to be a mentor and leader for incoming first year students in 2010, then you should apply to be a FYSH Liaison.

What is a FYSH Liaison? FYSH Liaisons are rising sophomores (class of ’13) who are invested in developing a strong Jewish community at Washington University. The initiative is designed to enhance Jewish life on campus and build leadership within this community. FYSH Liaisons will foster relationships with first year students at Wash U by serving as mentors and working together to create a dynamic atmosphere of Jewish life on campus. Liaisons serve as connectors and resources for students to explore and discover their Jewish identities. FYSH Liaisons will work together to create meaningful Jewish programming that is focused on connecting first year students to the Jewish community.

What is the commitment? FYSH Liaisons have an eight month term that begins during the Spring semester of their freshmen year. The term concludes in December of their sophomore year. FYSH Liaisons work together in the Spring to collaboratively plan the Into the Wild retreat that takes place over Labor Day. During the Fall semester, the Liaisons recruit freshmen to attend the retreat, facilitate the retreat with Hillel and JSU and then once they’re back on campus, continue to reach out to freshmen through the planning of several large and small FYSH social events.

So to summarize, FYSH Liaisons:
- Plan Into the Wild with JSU and Hillel
- Attend Into the Wild and facilitate aspects of the retreat
- Plan social events for freshmen during the Fall semester
- Plan small group programs to further engage freshmen and help build relationships
- Act as mentors to Jewish freshmen at Wash U

The FYSH Liaisons for 2010-11 have been chosen. Watch this space for application info for next year!

Peer-Network Engagement Internship

PNEIINNOVATE, COLLABORATE, CREATE. BE A PEER-NETWORK INTERN…

Be part of a team of extraordinary Jewish students at Wash U, charged with transforming student life.

- Engage in professional development and skill-building.
- Catalyze student involvement at Wash U.
- Be part of a national initiative with hundreds of other Peer-Network interns.
- Get paid a salary!

THE RIGHT RELATIONSHIP IS EVERYTHING…
Build relationships with uninvolved students and begin to broaden your social network.  Through a genuine interest in and understanding of others, Peer-Network interns foster and maintain relationships based on an appreciation of individuals’ aspirations, interests, and passions.  Increasing the number of relationships you have with uninvolved Jewish students will not only expand your reach, but also position you for the opportunity to connect these students with opportunities, experiences, and mentors that will be enriching to them.

TAKE INITIATIVE…
Create initiatives for the express purpose of connecting with as many uninvolved students as possible.  THINK BIG.  What are the most creative and innovative ways to attract and connect with students?  How can you utilize your existing friendships and relationships to reach more students?  Through these initiatives, the Peer-Network interns will collectively develop a follow-through approach for each offering and a plan to engage new students.  Each event represents an opportunity to gather student contact information, build a rapport with new students, and commence follow-through activities in order to build relationships.

DEVELOP THE FUTURE…
Invest in your peers in order to act as a role model and facilitate growth.  Foster student growth through engagement, seeking to enrich the lives of uninvolved students.  Act as a positive role model, building upon the strong relationships you have developed with your uninvolved peers. Actively encourage your peers to set and achieve goals, connect them with mentoring opportunities to advance their career and life-aims, and facilitate their transition from campus to post-college life.
