Alternative Spring Break Trip to Katrina Affected Areas
March 2006
Through the Washington University Campus Ministries, including St. Louis Hillel, over 200 Washington University students participated in seven simultaneous Alternative Spring Break Service Trips to Katrina affected areas. The students from St. Louis Hillel who attended are Cheryl Cooper, Shari Feirman, David Freeman, Sarah Klein, David Schwartz, Mollie Spevack, and Jonathan Steer. These students participated in the Alternative Spring Break Service Trip to Biloxi , Mississippi along with over 150 students from Hillel's all over the country. The students spent seven days helping rebuild roofs for local residents. The group was able to finish 14 roofs as well as study Jewish texts, and spent time sharing Jewish traditions with local families. Students stayed in Orange Grove , Mississippi in a tent community hosted by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the largest and oldest disaster relief organization. Alternative Break Trips are already planned for the Katrina affected areas for Winter Break and Spring Break 2006-2007. Trips will continue for the estimated 10 year rebuilding phase as long as funding is available. For more info about Winter and Spring Break Service trips contact Alana

Candy Israel
October 31, 2005
WSI (Wash U Student with Israel) members were split into four groups and given cake, candy, and a carte blanche for mayhem.  Using their imagination, they shaped their cakes into maps of Israel, Israeli flags, and anything else they could come up with. It was a delicious and messy program the likes of which Wash U won't soon forget. For more info about WSI contact Deena Moskowitz at dcmoskow@wustl.edu
